Lateral Link on "Breaking Back into Big Law"
In June, Lateral Link principal T.J. Duane spoke at the NYC Bar Association on the topic getting back into a large law firm. Other panelists included David Lat of Above The Law, John Cannon, hiring partner at Shearman & Sterling LLP and Helen Long, recruiting director at Ropes & Gray LLP. The panelists offered the following advice to attendees:
- Be patient. The legal job market is slow right now and it will take more time than usual to land a job, so patience is key.
- Be flexible. Consider taking internships or public interest positions that may develop into full-time positions.
- Don't just dust off the resume. Thoroughly revise your resume and deal sheet so that you stand out from the crowd.
- Don't just sit around. Use your downtime to continue your professional development. Employers will want to see that you are actively furthering your career.
- If you've been laid off, be honest about it. Don't try to deceive a future employer; it will come back to bite you.

| MEET GLORIA CANNON | | |
Lateral Link welcomes Gloria Cannon as a Director in our Los Angeles office. Gloria oversees attorney placements in Northern and Southern California, Arizona and Nevada.  Gloria started her legal career as a financial restructuring associate with the Los Angeles office of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy, where she worked for over four years and was a member of the hiring committee and recruiting committee. Gloria then was a member of the in-house legal department for over five years at Oaktree Capital Management, LLC, serving as a Vice President. Prior to joining Lateral Link, Gloria was a Managing Director for five years with a large national attorney search firm, placing attorneys and partners with law firms of all sizes, including Am Law 100 law firms and highly-regarded boutiques. Gloria received her J.D. from Loyola Law School, and her B.A. from University of California, Los Angeles.
Gloria was born and raised in Southern California, and is happily married to a fellow UCLA grad. In her spare time, Gloria loves cheering on the Bruins at football and basketball games (and even admits to attending all three recent Final Four appearances), hiking with her rescue mutt, Bailey, and traveling. She also is actively involved with the Dream Street Foundation, a non-profit organization that operates summer camps for terminally ill children, as well as the Pasadena Humane Society.
