Arent Fox: The mechanism of attack by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 on human cells is thought to involve a specific region, known as the receptor-binding domain (RMD), located on its now-infamous glycoprotein spikes; the RMD binds to a host receptor protein (angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 or ACE2) located on the surface of certain cells, most notably the epithelial cells of the lung.
