Employee Spotlight: Zain Atassi

When it comes to navigating the complexities of the legal market in Chicago and the Midwest, few people are better positioned to guide attorneys through the process than Zain Atassi. As a Principal at Lateral Link, Zain has built a reputation as one of the most trusted and well-connected legal recruiters in the region, and it’s easy to understand why.

With a client roster that spans AmLaw firms, elite boutiques, and top regional law firms, and a network that reaches deep into law firm leadership and hiring circles across the Midwest, Zain brings something to the table that goes far beyond simply matching candidates with open roles. She is a strategic partner to the attorneys she advises and to the firms that rely on her.

With a vast amount of experience, Zain shares about her journey in legal recruiting and provides key advice every attorney should follow.

What do you enjoy most about working in recruiting?

I love helping people and being a problem-solver. Connecting with people, understanding their goals, and helping them achieve those goals is the best part of my job. I also love that this is a relationship-driven industry. I get to meet some great people along the way, many of whom I maintain relationships with long-term.

How would you describe your career path and how your practice has evolved into what it is today?

I began my career as a litigation attorney, and that training still shapes how I approach recruiting today – analytically, strategically, and with a deep understanding of how law firms operate and evaluate talent. Over time, my practice has evolved into a relationship-driven advisory role, where I leverage that legal background to guide both clients and candidates through nuanced, high-stakes career decisions. At its core, my work is built on honesty, transparency, and integrity.  I focus on doing right by the people I represent, and prioritizing long-term fit and alignment over short-term transactions.

What’s the proudest moment youโ€™ve had as a recruiter?

It’s always very rewarding when I can make a mutually beneficial match between a firm and an attorney. My proudest moment was when I was able to find a “needle in a haystack” candidate for a client, and in turn the candidate received a major promotion to Partner when joining the new firm. This was especially gratifying for my candidate after she had been passed over many times at her former firm. Everyone was thrilled!

What’s the best advice you can give to someone considering a lateral move?

Timing is everything, so always stay informed and prepared. Things can change on a dime in this business, and you never want to be caught flat-footed, so it’s always good to have a trusted legal recruiter in your pocket advising you along the way – especially one that has your best interests at heart.

I was drawn to Lateral Link because of the flexibility and autonomy the platform provides. It allows me to run my desk the way I believe it should be run, thoughtfully and with a relationship-first approach. That independence enables me to focus on delivering the highest level of service to both my clients and my candidates.

Favorite vacation destination or a memorable trip you’ve taken?

I love to travel, and I’m fortunate enough to have been to many wonderful places around the world. So far my favorite vacation spots have been Santorini, Greece, the Amalfi Coast, and Bali. All three have the perfect mix of gorgeous scenery, culturally rich sightseeing experiences, fun activities, and great food.

What do you like to do in your free time outside of work?

Travel, spend time with family and friends, and anything outdoors, particularly racket sports, skiing, and paddle boarding at the beach in the summer.
